Interactive Games In the Classroom

INTERACTIVE GAMES IN THE CLASSROOM (All Levels)



1. Vocabulary Games

a. 5 words games

This game can be done individually or in group. Give Students a copy of grid and tell them to write 5 words in each grid with categories you’ve chosen.
Eg, grid A is about animal, B transportation, C jobs and D fruit. Set 5 minutes to finish the challenge and the winner is the fastest.

b. Shouting Spell
Divide students in 2 groups. Give the captain a word written on a card and the captain must spell the word from the other end of the room to the writer. Give point for the fastest correct answer and the winner is the team with most point.

c. Hot Stand
Basically, this game is almost the same with Hot Seat. Divide students in 2 teams. Put 10 cards with words chosen (based on the vocabulary discussed). In turns student have to stand up and take a card and explained the word to the member. If the word is guessed, the other student takes the turn and so on. The winner is the team that can finish 5 words first.

d. Music Vocabulary
This is an individual game. We put several paper on he wall with the language or the vocabulary that we wanted to use. Give each student different colored marker. Play music to give them time to think and when the music stops, each student runs toward different paper and writes down words related to the vocabulary. Whoever gets the highest number of the correct words, win.

2. Reading Games

a. Hot Eyes
Put the students in a pair or more. Give a small white board to each group. Stick a reading text outside the class in separated paragraphs. Read a question and the captain has to run outside to find the answer and dictate the answer to the writer. Give point for the fastest correct answer. Continue with other questions you’ve prepared. The winner is the team with most score.

b. Speed Reading
Divide students in a pair or more. Give a reading passage with mistake. Students must find the mistakes in 5 minutes. The winner is the group that can find most mistakes. Followed with a class discussion on the mistakes.

3. Writing Games

a. Forming Sentences
Divide students in a pair or more. Give several words and they have to form sentences from those words in certain tenses. Whoever finishes first, say the password and if the sentence is correct, they earn a point.

b. Chain Writing
Prepare a piece of paper with a sentence written as the first sentence. Distribute the paper and tell the student to continue the sentence in a minute. If the time is up, tell the student to pass the paper to the person on their right and that student continue the modified sentence from the previous student. Continue until the paper completes one circle. In the end, ask the student to choose the best/ craziest/whatever category story

e. Speed Writing
Divide students in a pair or more. Stick pictures outside the classroom and in turn students have to run outside to look at any picture and run back to write a sentence. Set 5-10 minutes to complete the game. The winner is the group which can write a complete story in a time allotted.

4. Grammar Games

a. Running Dictation
Divide students in teams. Stick jumbled sentences marked with number. Call out a number and the captain must run out to find a sentence on that number, arrange the sentence and run back to class and dictate the sentence to the writer.
Correct sentence earns a point and the winner is the team with most score.

b. Hot Betty
This game is good for reviewing grammar materials discussed. Divide students in a small team. Give them several sentences which some have mistakes. Give 5 minutes for them to discuss whether the sentence is True or False. Give each group 10 points as the starter point. Call out a number and each group has to say T or F for that number, and they have to bet on their answer. If their bet is correct their points will be added with their betting points, if their bet is wrong their points will be reduced as their betting points. The winner is the team with bigger points.

c. Hot Lips.
Divide students in 2 teams. Tell the captain to sit on a chair across the room. Give them a jumbled sentence and they have to arrange it in a correct sentence. Then they tell the sentence to the writer who stands in front without making any sounds. So this game is a lip reading game. The writer writes the sentence by reading their captain lips. The other members are allowed to help. The winner is the fastest team which earns most points. Play music as distracter.

d. Hot Mouth
Divide students in 2 teams. Give each team a different jumbled sentence and they have to shout the correct sentence to the writer. The winner is the fastest team which earns most points.

5. Listening Games

a. Chinese Whisper
Divide students in 2 groups. Tell them to stand in 2 rows. Show a jumbled sentence to the student on the back and he/she whispers the correct sentence to the student in front and so on until the first student in front, and he/she writes the sentence on the white board. The winner is the fastest team in writing the correct sentence. Play music as a destructor.

b. Hot Ears
Set students in teams. Play a record which has several sentences read in turns. Play each sentence once and ask how many words, verbs, adjectives, or any language focus, said in the record. Put their answer under groups name and they earn a point if the answer is correct. The winner is the team with most point.
